Never Ending Stomach Flu…

Standard

So for some reason this year, my family was hit hard, really hard by the stomach flu. When it first showed up 4 weeks ago, we thought it was just a 24 hour strain. Boy oh boy! Were we mistaken. *A heads up about post, slightly graphic descriptions of vomit and diarrhea. If you don’t have a strong stomach stop reading now!*

It all began with our daughter(a Thursday night 4 weeks ago). She vomited once and was just upset. The next day, was our son. He vomited a few times and was uncomfortable. Then it hit me, for a literal 24 hours and then my husband. We were happy it had run its course thru us all and we were on our way back to normal life. Then the following Saturday, it started all over again with my son.

This time there was more vomit and it was like poltergeist projectile. My husband and I had never seen puke like that before. This was a two day, I could totally tell my son was sick. We did everything to keep our daughter in the clear, but to no avail, she got it a few days later. However, she was a one vomit and fussy for a day then better. Luckily, it passed my husband and I this time.

My son woke up for the next few days complaining of stomach pain. My first thought is immediately appendicitis(strong family history on bit sides)… So we went to the docs. Felt like I wasted my $25 co-pay to hear the doc say the same thing I’ve been doing, but it helped my son(he loves Doc Mcstuffins and he knows docs make you feel better). He was fine after this.

He did not like wearing “sick” mask at dr.s office

Seemed to feel better after visit.

Three days after that doctor visit, we were back I there with our daughter, because she was inconsolable. I could tell her stomach hurt. She was so uncomfortable.  Just crying and crying. Not nursing, I felt terrible.

This was only way comfortable. Around 3 AM

So we were back at the doctors office with her a few days later. Her inconsolable self lasted 3 days. On third day we went to docs. They gave her some Zantac to calm her stomach and it seemed to work.

Then about a week later, my son began to act sick. Sluggish, sleepy, not active, just not himself. I was thinking he was just playing it up since he was getting a little spoiled while sick. I mean really, my husband and  I felt bad for the kid. He wasn’t himself. He just laid around all day (no fever). We went to bed at our normal time and then at 3:30AM, I am a woken to a blood curtailing scream from my son. I walk into his room and he is covered in vomit. He puked in the middle of the night, and slept in it, then woke up when he couldn’t open his eye because it was dry. It looked like war paint. I almost threw up just from the sight.

So at 3:35AM there I was giving my son a shower, getting him  dressed and then snuggling him in bed with us. I did not have the patience to clean his bed up at the moment. Luckily, my husband went in and stripped it. My son took a little while to fall back to sleep, but when he did he slept in a bit which was nice. Amazingly enough, somehow our daughter slept thru all this!

When everyone woke up, it seemed like a regular morning. We were eating breakfast, my son was eating a bowl of cereal. I got up from the table and my son screamed I turned around and he said in a whiny screammy cry voice, “it coming out of my butt!” I picked him up and ran him to the bathroom. At first I was upset? Thinking how could you poop your pants, but then I thought about his morning could tell he had no control over this at all. He definitely just sharted. So I changed him and told him next time you feel that you have to go tell mommy. He shook his head and went back to eating, he even apologized! I told him it’s ok, accidents happen! Not even 10 minutes later, the same scream. He did it again! So we started over. Then again10-20 minutes later!

Thank goodness I had some extra disposable training pants. We just went thru 4 outfits in less than an hour. I put in his training pants, and explained to him that he needed tot ell me when he had to go. He proceeded to poo his pants 4-5 more times. Then that afternoon, my daughters poo changed from solid to mush and both of them  lost their appetite. This was not a good day…

I called the doctor and explained what was going on. They recommended probiotics and pedialyte. They said this seems like the tail end of the stomach flu and there really isn’t much more to do. Within 24-36 hours there seemed to be a calm in our house! FINALLY! This was this past Wednesday.

Then on Friday, I woke up, not feeling well. I felt dizzy and nauseous. This is hard to handle when I have to take care of my children. I did the best that I could…. And thankfully it was the time of day when my hubby came home. He let me go take a nap. I napped hard almost two hours. Saturday morning, I woke up feeling better, not 100% but better. We went about our day and had fun! Went and took our Easter Bunny photo! We even went to a hockey game at night! It was a great day!

Sunday morning, we wake up, I still feel good, but not 100%, we go to church. When we come home and eat brunch! After I ate, I didn’t feel good. It was nap time for the kids, so it was nap time for me too! A good two hour nap! It may have been good, but I woke up not feeling good. Not at all!

That was the end of me. It hit me and it hit me hard.  I was so angry! What have I or my family done to deserve a month of the stomach bug?!

I took the advice for the kids from the pediatrician and had my hubby go get probiotics and electrolyte water and Gatorade.

Thankfully, my husband was able to stay home from work and take care of me and more importantly the kids. While he was home he was able to clean and sanitize things. Once I’m in the clear, I plan on sanitizing everything.

I thought I was doing a good job. I was washing hands untilmraw(from washing so much), using paper towels to dry, changing the kids sheets, had them sleep in seperate rooms, Clorox wipe everything, using bath towels once, Lysoling everything, airing out the house, diffusing cleansing essential oils…etc.

Hopefully, the weather here is finally going to balance out and I can open all the windows and bleach everything!

Anyone have any other advice? I would love to hear it.

Till next time!

*i am not associated with Zantac, Clorox, Lysol, Gatorade, or any other brand mentioned. Just a mom trying to get a clean home and healthy again!

104.5…Ick

Standard

When I finished my last post, it was like a cliffhanger… I wanted to end the story.

So, three days after the children’s museum, my son had a fever. I was thinking, here we go again another sickness cycle.

I figured out he had a fever just before his nap time. So, before he laid down, I gave him some fever reducer, read him a story, and he passed out. He napped for three hours. Normally, he only naps for two hours, sometimes an hour and a half. This was a sign that he still wasn’t feeling well. When he woke up, he said “my feet hurt, and my arms” I was thinking he had pins and needles from napping. So, I told him lets jump and wake them up…he did a jump then walked away and laid on the couch. He even grabbed a blanket and cuddled up on the couch. This is definitely not normal after nap behavior…usually he’s a little ball of energy. I felt so bad for him…

I wanted to lower the chance of Eva getting sick, I tried to keep them separated as much as I could…Normally, we give them joint baths…not tonight!

Ethan, was a mushy cuddly sleepy boy. That is also another trigger for my husband and I to know he’s not feeling well.

My dad is visiting, so he and I went to a AHL hockey game(we are both major hockey fans). So my husband was on baby duty. They watched a movie and then took a bath. Just before bed, Ethan’s fever spiked to 103.4…my husband gave him some fever reducer and put him to bed… He conked out.

When he woke up in the am, he was a bubbly ball of energy again! A nice 24 hour bug/virus…this was Friday night.

Sunday morning, I woke up feeling like butt. I awoke to a sore throat and achy everything…Side note, thank goodness that this was a national holiday weekend and my husband was home… I laid on the couch all day, only getting up to eat and use the bathroom. Now, I completely understood how Ethan felt the day before… By dinner time, I was beginning to get the chills. I took my temperature and it was 100.3…So I decided to take a shower… Bad idea! It made my chills and aches worse. I decided to take ibuprofen to control the fever.

I bundled up and curled up under four blankets on the couch, I was literally shivering… I took my temperature again, and it was 103.7…. I then got in a temperate bath (Oh my goodness! That’s torture) it brought my
fever down to 101.3… I was still shivering and super achy everywhere.

I finally fell asleep! (My husband is sweet he laid on the couch with me
For a while and then went to bed once I was asleep…He didn’t want me to be alone!…Super brownie points for him) At some point I. The middle of the night I awoke in a puddle of sweat… I uncovered myself and got right back to sleep…when I woke up, I felt great minus a few aches.

I was fine all day, just a super sore throat, so I continued to rest and take naps. Like I said before thank goodness my husband had off today, he totally took care of me and the kids(went to the aquarium). Then, around summertime, I decided to take a shower… Again, bad idea! The chills and aches came right back. I took my temperature and again back up to 100.5…
This time I decided to drink a hot toddy…tea, whiskey, honey and lemon. Good old fashion medicine… Then my fever spiked to 104.5… I immediately got up and in the bath. Thank goodness this lowers temperature… It may be uncomfortable, but it works! 25 minutes in the bath, now I’m sitting here typing this with a 99.6-100.4

I am definitely heading to bed now! Hopefully, I will feel better tomorrow… If not then off to the docs I go!😷

I haven’t been sick like this in forever! I hope this isn’t the flu… You know the one year I don’t get the flu shot… And as the commercial says, “Moms can’t take sick days!” Thank goodness my dad is here too!

Till next time! 😄

Germaphobe Mom…Well Today

Standard

Normally, I’m not a germaophobe. I mean, I care about germs, and I know they are bad, but I understand that my children get dirty, and will encounter germs. I always make sure that their hand are clean when we are eating.

Recently, in my house, everyone has been sick. I mean, all of them at the same time…I somehow have been able to avoid the illness’. I’m not even sure how…especially since I was the one not sleeping (because Eva was waking every 3-4 hours sometimes every 2)…I then made my own assumption, it’s because I was an elementary school teacher and built up my immune system, unlike my husband…one of the kids would get a small cold, then give it to the other, and then my husband. This cycle went on for about a month and 1/2.

Finally, everyone was healthy! Yay! (Happy dance!) So, I decided to take the kids to the children’s Museum. This way I could finally get myself and the kids out of the house. Now, I began to prepare myself for this journey. I told myself, the kids will not get sick again, I’m over this illness stricken house…i loaded up on antibacterial hand gel, prepared Ethan to make sure he didn’t touch his eyes, ears or mouth while at the museum. I knew that Eva wouldn’t be taken out of a wrap/stroller. So, we were good to go.

We had a blast at the museum. I loved how it was very locally displayed. We love in a coastal area, so they had a local tugboat, busses, Even a local bank, grocery store, fire department, and police. It was great! Ethan loved all the scenarios they had set up that he could play in. Now, he didn’t really get into all the costumes or truly understand all of the places, like the mini bank, but he loved the place. His favorite was the tugboat they had there, because you could fish off of it.

As soon as we were ready to leave, I antibacterial gelled my hands and Ethan’s. We got in the car and went home. I was super happy knowing that he didn’t touch his eyes, nose or mouth, we even washed our hands once in the museum, because he went potty. I was satisfied at my germaophobic self.

Unfortunately, three days later he had a fever…

Now, I’m working on getting my hand on an essential oil blend that will help detox my house!

Till next time!

Whirlwind Thanksgiving Week!

Standard

Thank”sick”giving…Yup! That’s what our Thanksgiving was. I had two sick babies and one sick hubby.

It all began Monday morning. My husband went off to work with a tickle in his throat, nothing major. Then my son woke up with a 102.7 fever… This was the first time his fever ever got above 100. This is also the first time I have ever had to deal with something like this… so I did what I always did if he had a fever…gave him some Tylenol. Then I called my husband…I think I may have panicked a bit. I had him come home…I called the doctor and they just told me to watch it for 24hours and if it didn’t go away then to come in tomorrow… So that’s what we did! Luckily, it went away…My poor baby was so lethargic and feeling yucky… I never saw him like that before… It pulled on my heartstrings…

During the day my husband began to sneeze, cough, and say his throat hurt worse…Oh Boy! When we went to bed, he was feeling yucky, but not too yucky…He woke up and he was terrible, his throat was swollen. About two months ago, he had uvulitis, swollen uvula {hanging thing in back of throat}, that he went to the ER. His throat looked like that again, but not on the scary scale of how it was the last time. I told him to stay home. He insisted on going to work. At 11:30am he walked back in the door! Now, I have two sick boys in the house…Ethan was a bit better, no fever, but runny nose and a hacking cough and still very lethargic. Homeschool Pre-K took a break this week.

We were invited to go to Thanksgiving dinner over at our very good friends’ house. I texted them our status, because we were making the stuffing and another side, I didn’t want to just ditch them. This way they were prepared if we called on Wednesday night to say we weren’t coming. As Tuesday progressed, the boys were sick and Mommy and Eva were fine!

Wednesday, hubby stays home, Ethan is a little perkier-nowhere near 100%, but definitely better, Eva and mommy, still ok! We have a normal sick day, watch some TV, play some games, nap, mommy tries to get some stuff done, key word, try. As a family, since no one has a fever anymore, we make the executive decision to go to dinner.

I’m so glad that we did! We had an amazing time with our friends’ family. Our son calls one of our friend’s parents Grammy and Gruffy! They are Ethan’s extended grandparents and he loves it! And we know that they love him. Our family is far away, so we only go to them for Christmas time, so it was lovely to be surrounded by them.

We arrived home a little late, but the kiddies were sleeping and we managed to transfer both of them to bed without waking them…First time ever! At 3:30AM Eva awakes screaming her head off. I get her, and she’s burning up. I take her little temperature and Whoa! It’s 103.5…I get my hubby up and have him run a luke-warm bath, while I try to nurse her to calm her down… HAHA! Yeah right, she was so uncomfortable, she couldn’t stop to eat. So, at 3:40AM, we got her in the bath and she started to calm. As soon as she was calm enough to not choke, we gave her some Tylenol. I began pouring water down her back and over her shoulders while she played and splashed. I think we had her in there for 30-40 minutes. When we took her out, she was still warm, but not burning up. I retook her temp and it was at 101, I was so relieved. We got a diaper on her, and crawled into bed and I nursed her to sleep. When she woke up, she was happy and warm. Her fever was riding at 100; she had a runny runny nose, and now a hacking cough. I didn’t call the doctor this time, because of what they said when I called for Ethan. I watched it and by dinner time her fever was gone.

Happy Than”sick”giving! Having two sick babies and one sick hubby doesn’t help me get anything done. For the past week our house looked like a bomb exploded laundry, toys, and dishes everywhere… HAHA! I have finally begun to catch up, that even includes this blog.

Somehow we managed to decorate for Christmas over the weekend…It’s kind of a big deal for me…Ethan and hubby are much better, Eva just still has a runny nose. And I’m finally starting to clean up our house…Catching up feels nice.

I am the only one that didn’t get sick. Fingers crossed that it’s not lingering and going to hit me hard…

Till Next time!
